Your Newborn Experience Begins Before You Arrive

Your session doesn’t begin when I pick up my camera.

It begins with getting to know you.

Before your newborn session, we’ll talk about the colors and styles you’re drawn to, whether you prefer simple and timeless portraits or more elaborate creative setups, and anything meaningful you’d love to incorporate.

Some families want soft neutrals.

Others love florals, rich colors or whimsical fine-art sets.

And sometimes a family brings an idea that has a much deeper personal meaning.

You don’t need to arrive with every detail figured out. My job is to help turn your ideas into a cohesive newborn gallery while keeping the focus on your baby.

Our Herndon studio has a curated collection of newborn wraps, outfits, props, accessories and backdrops that can be used to create your session.

And if there’s something meaningful to your family, tell me about it.

That is often where some of the most special photographs begin.

Making Your Newborn Session Personal: Baby Travis’s Baseball Legacy

A recent session with 10-day-old baby Travis is a beautiful example of how we can personalize a newborn experience.

His parents, Shaniece and Brandon, traveled from Maryland to our Herndon studio after falling in love with my newborn work.

Travis is their first baby, and his parents wanted his portraits to incorporate something especially meaningful to their family:

Dad’s baseball legacy.

Brandon is a national-level baseball player, so rather than simply creating a generic baseball-themed setup, we incorporated Dad’s own baseball bat and glove into his son’s portraits.

These were more than props.

They were pieces of Dad’s story being photographed beside his newborn son.

One day, Travis may grow up loving baseball too—or he may choose an entirely different path.

Either way, he’ll have a photograph of himself at just ten days old surrounded by something that played an important role in his father’s life.

That’s what personalization means to me.

Your newborn portraits can be beautiful and meaningful.

Your Baby Leads the Session

One of the most important things parents should know about newborn photography is that babies don’t arrive at the studio knowing our plans.

And that’s exactly how it should be.

We may have beautiful ideas prepared, but once I meet your baby, I follow their cues.

During Travis’s session, his parents hoped for some very simple portraits without clothing or wraps.

We were able to create a beautiful natural portrait.

Afterward, Travis let us know that he preferred having a little more coverage around him.

So we adjusted.

We introduced a soft wrap, helped him settle comfortably and continued photographing him in a way that worked better for him.

Some newborns love being wrapped.

Some prefer their hands free.

Some sleep deeply through several setups.

Others are curious and awake.

There is no “wrong” way for your newborn to behave during a photography session.

I don’t believe in forcing a baby into a particular photograph simply because it was part of our original plan.

We adapt the session to your baby—not your baby to the session.

What Happens If My Baby Needs to Feed or Won’t Sleep?

This is one of the biggest concerns I hear from new parents.

Please don’t worry.

Newborn sessions are intentionally designed to allow time for your baby’s needs.

Travis’s session lasted approximately three hours because he needed a little extra time to feed and then settle back into sleep.

We simply gave him that time.

If your baby is hungry, we stop for feeding.

If baby needs changing, we pause.

If baby needs Mom or Dad, there is time for cuddling.

And if baby takes longer than expected to settle back into sleep, that’s okay too.

Newborn sessions aren’t meant to feel rushed.

Those feeding, soothing and cuddling breaks aren’t interruptions to the experience.

They are part of caring for your baby.

Once Travis was comfortable and settled, he slept beautifully—and throughout the session he surprised us with some wonderful little smiles.

From Simple Portraits to Custom Newborn Sets

One reason families choose Kriansh Kreative is the variety we can create within one newborn experience.

Your gallery doesn’t have to be entirely neutral or entirely themed.

We can combine styles.

You may love a simple portrait that focuses completely on your baby’s face and tiny features, but also want one elaborate setup that tells something about your family.

For Travis, we created different baseball-inspired sets alongside natural and wrapped newborn portraits.

One of my favorite images from his session is actually one of the simplest baseball portraits.

Meaningful items don’t have to be related to sports.

Families may want to incorporate a handmade blanket from Grandma, an heirloom, a piece connected to their culture, something representing Mom or Dad’s profession, or another object with sentimental meaning.

Not every session needs a theme.

But when something is important to your family and can be incorporated beautifully and safely, I love finding a way to make it part of your baby’s story.

Newborn Safety Comes Before the Photograph

Newborn photography requires more than beautiful styling and good lighting.

Understanding how to safely handle and pose newborns is incredibly important.

At Kriansh Kreative, I have completed professional newborn safety and posing education, and I use baby-led posing throughout my sessions.

If your baby doesn’t enjoy a pose, we move on.

If baby needs additional support, baby remains supported.

And some of the more artistic newborn portraits you see in a finished gallery may be created using composite photography.

This means multiple photographs can be carefully combined during editing so that baby can remain supported while the individual photographs are being taken.

Parents don’t always see what happens behind a finished newborn portrait, which is why I believe it’s important to explain this part of the process.

No photograph is more important than your baby’s safety and comfort.

What Should You Bring to Your Newborn Session?

You don’t need to bring an entire nursery with you.

Our studio provides a curated selection of newborn wraps, outfits, props, accessories and backdrops.

I’ll guide you before your session based on what we’re planning.

If you’d like to incorporate something meaningful—such as Dad’s baseball glove in Travis’s session—please let me know ahead of time so I can think about how to photograph it safely and beautifully.

Of course, you’ll also want to bring baby’s usual feeding and changing necessities.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?

You don’t need to wait until your baby arrives to reserve your newborn photography experience.

In fact, I recommend contacting us during pregnancy, ideally during your second or third trimester.

We’ll use your estimated due date to reserve space on the calendar and then finalize your actual photography date once your little one arrives.

Many newborn portraits are created during baby’s early weeks, when babies are often naturally sleepy and curled.

But babies don’t follow calendars perfectly either.

If your little one has already arrived, please don’t assume you’ve missed your opportunity for beautiful newborn photographs.
